Program

( 3 nights in Bologna)

Day 1, Sun, Oct 3rd

Pick up at Bologna International Airport at an hour to be established once everyone’s flight schedules are in. We recommend you book a flight that lands in the early afternoon (2pm – 4pm) as there will be limited transfers to hotel in the city center of Bologna. If you remain within our suggested time slot you can avoid having to wait at the airport for a long time if you arrive too early (or having to reach the hotel by your own means if you arrive too late). Check into rooms and freshen up. Welcome dinner.

Day 2, Mon, Oct 4th

After breakfast visit a prize-winning Parmigiano Reggiano factory to discover how this precious cheese is made. On our way back to hotel have lunch in a typical trattoria. When we return to Bologna you could visit the fascinating Santo Stefano Basilica, a most unique religious site made up of seven interlocking churches whose architecture spans centuries of history. Dinner oyo.

Day 3, Tues, Oct 5th

After breakfast visit Bologna, the foodie capital of Italy and home to the oldest university in Europe. The city is made up of red-brick palazzi, winding porticoed streets, medieval towers and a grand main square. Explore the Quadrilatero district wandering through the neighborhood's streets brimming with market stalls, cozy cafes and well-stocked gourmet delis. After lunch in one of the many excellent restaurants found in Bologna you'll have free time to do some shopping or to see one of the city's many museums such as the wonderful Tagliavini collection of musical instruments housed in the exquisitely restored Church of San Colombano. Dinner oyo.

(6 nights in Rimini)

Day 4. Wed, Oct 6th

After breakfast transfer to new hotel in Rimini, a famous seaside destination that pairs long stretches of sandy beaches to a most interesting historic center. Just a short walk from the coast lies a pedestrian-friendly old town that blends two-thousand years of Roman history, Renaissance art, and a vibrant local lifestyle. En route to new hotel stop at Cervia and take a boat ride to visit the town's salt pan park. Enjoy a fish and seafood meal at a local restaurant. Reach new hotel right across from the sea. Check into rooms and freshen up and, why not, if the weather permits, you might go for a swim before dinner oyo.

Day 5, Thurs, Oct 7th

After breakfast a local mycologist will accompany us on our first foray inside the heavily wooded Casentino Forests National Park often celebrated as a premier hub for wild mushrooms—particularly porcini mushrooms. Have lunch in a local trattoria. In the afternoon visit the newly renovated Archaelogical Museum of Sarsina, one of the most important museums of Roman civilization in Northern Italy, famous for its large collection of Roman sepulchral monuments, including massive stone mausoleums (such as the towering monument of Rufus standing nearly 14 meters tall). The museum also features extraordinary polychrome figurative floor mosaics. Return to hotel in Rimini and dinner oyo.

Day 6, Fri, Oct 8th

After breakfast go on a foray near the town of Brisighella. Have lunch in a local trattoria. Take a stroll through Brisighella, an exceptionally well-preserved medieval, mountain village of old world charm. As we'll be in the heart of the Romagna wine district we will visit a winery on our way back to our hotel and enjoy a wine tasting. Dinner oyo.

Day 7, Sat, Oct 9th

After breakfast go on a foray in forests close to Cesena. Have lunch in a local trattoria. In the afternoon have a guided tour of the 15th century Malatestiana Library, Europe's first civic library and the only surviving example in the world of a humanist library that remains completely intact in its original building, furniture and book collection. Return to Rimini for dinner oyo.

Day 8. Sun, Oct 10th

After breakfast head off to Sant'Agata in Feltria where an annual white truffle fair takes place every Sunday in October. Visit the town that during the fair will be full of local wares, fall produce, and of course, all things truffle as stalls proudly display basketfuls of black and white truffles for you to admire and sniff. Enjoy a truffle-based lunch in a local trattoria. Return to hotel where you'll have free time to explore Rimini further, go for a dip in the sea or perhaps enjoy some of the amenities the hotel offers. Dinner oyo.

Day 9, Mon, Oct 11th

After breakfast go on a truffle hunt with a local truffle hunter and his dog. Visit a plant nursery that has rare fruit plants and a black truffle farm. Have lunch in a typical trattoria, visit L'Antica Stamperia di Carpegna. It is a print workshop that still uses an ancient Italian tradition of printing with hand-carved woodblocks to create patterns upon linen fabric using a simple dye of vinegar and rusted iron. Dinner oyo.

(last night in Bologna)

Day 10, Tues, Oct 12th

After breakfast transfer to hotel near Bologna airport. Visit Ravenna en route, famous globally as the capital of Byzantine mosaics. Guided visit to see the city's UNESCO world-heritage sites, its dazzling collections of 5th - 6th century mosaics spread out over several churches and baptisteries around town. Enjoy farewell lunch. Arrive at final hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner oyo.

Day 11, Wed, Oct 13th

Departure from Bologna airport. We recommend you book a flight that departs around noon (11am – 1pm). We will only offer a limited amount of transfers to airport therefore if you remain within our suggested time slot you can avoid having to wait at the airport for a long time if your flight departs very late or having to reach hotel by your own means if your flight departs very early.**
