Program

 

Day 1 – Sept 11, Fri

Arrival at Verona-Villafranca international airport. Pick up times to be established once everyone’s flight schedules are in. There will be a limited amount of transfers offered from the airport to hotel, therefore it is recommended you book a flight that lands between 11am - 4pm. If you remain within our suggested time slot you can avoid having to wait at the airport for a long time if you arrive too early, or having to reach hotel by your own means, if you arrive too late. Check into rooms, freshen up and settle in as you wait for the other guests to arrive. Once all guests have checked into rooms, meet in lobby at an established time for an orientation walk. Early welcome dinner (for Italian standards) to allow guests to recover from day of traveling.

Day 2 – Sept 12, Sat

After breakfast transfer to hotel in Bressanone. Stopping in the pretty town of Tramin at the Hofstratter winery, listed as the most famous winery of the region by the 'World Atlas of Wines'. Visit the cellars and enjoy a wine tasting. Lunch at a local trattoria. Arrival at hotel in the afternoon. Check into rooms. Meet in hotel garden at a designated time to go for a stroll in this beautiful, walled Medieval town with lots of shops, cafés and buildings of historical interest. Dinner oyo.

Day 3 – Sept 13, Sun

After breakfast meet local mycologist and go on 1st foray. Lunch in a local trattoria. On our return to Bressanone visit the town hosting our group, considered the prettiest town of South Tyrol. Visit the Bishop's Palace with its great inner Renaissance courtyard that houses a great collection of artwork. Free time in the evening. Dinner oyo.

Day 4 – Sept 14, Mon

After breakfast go on 2nd foray in a beautiful Alpine spot. Lunch in a local trattoria. After lunch take a fun cable car ride up to Mount Plose that offers fantastic views of the Dolomites. Free time in the evening. Dinner oyo.

Day 5 – Sept 15, Tues

After breakfast arm yourself with basket and hiking stick for your next mushroom picking adventure in the Rodengo Alps. Have lunch in local trattoria. Visit the 12th century Rodengo Castle perched dramatically above a gorge. See the impressive Iwein frescoes, the oldest mural paintings of the German-speaking world. Dinner oyo.

Day 6 - Sept 16, Wed

After breakfast go on your next mushroom foray in forests near the Val di Funes. Have lunch in a local trattoria. In the afternoon visit the Puez-Odle Nature Park and UNESCO World heritage site to see the Geisler Peaks, a distinctive massif in the Dolomites known for their dramatic, needle-like pinnacles. Return to Bressanone for dinner oyo.

Day 7 - Sept 17, Thurs

After breakfast depart for the morning foray. Have lunch in a local trattoria. In the afternoon visit the Novacella Abbey, a remarkable monastery complex that combines great art, incredible architecture, a beautiful, manicured garden and an impressive Rococo library with a great collection of ancient books... but wait, there's more! The abbey is also a wine estate! Have a wine tasting to try the delicious wines that are produced here. Dinner oyo.

Day 8 – Sept 18, Fri

After breakfast go on our last foray in the forests of Falzes. Have a picnic lunch at the South Tyrolean open-air museum near Brunico. After lunch enjoy a guided visit of this amazing folklore museum, an open-air site containing old, original farmhouses, workshops and gardens. Return to Bressanone for dinner oyo.

Day 9 – Sept 19, Sat

After breakfast transfer to hotel in Verona stopping in Bolzano, the capital of the Alto Adige region, along the way. Free time to stroll through the old city with its pastel-colored townhouses. Lunch in a local trattoria. Have a guided tour of the Archeological Museum to see the world-famous Ötzi, the iceman from 3,300 BC the oldest and best preserved wet mummy in the world. So remarkably well-preserved is the Neolithic man that even his tools, possessions (including mushrooms!), full-set of clothing and last meal have remained intact. Arrive at hotel by late afternoon. Dinner oyo.

Day 10 – Sept 20, Sun

After breakfast explore Lake Garda where we'll go on a boat tour from the extremely pretty town of Sirmione with its lovely castle surrounded by emerald waters and the picturesque, 1st century AD Roman villa to Isola del Garda, the largest island on the lake. Visit the stunning Venetian, neo-Gothic villa and its gardens which include a formal, Italian garden with meticulously manicured hedges, a citrus and pomegranate garden showcasing rare flowers, and a wild park, home to diverse plant life. Return to hotel. Dinner oyo.

Day 11 – Sept 21, Mon

After breakfast guided tour of the extraordinary city of Verona, home to Romeo and Juliet. See the pink-tinged marble 1st century Roman Arena, one of the best preserved ancient buildings of its kind that is still used for performances today; Piazza delle Erbe with its buzzing cafés and sumptuous buildings; Piazza dei Signori, Verona's beautiful open-air salon encircled by a series of elegant Renaissance palazzi; the 13th century St Anastasia Gothic church, with its exquisitely decorated vaulted ceiling; and the ornate Gothic funerary monuments of the Della Scala family. Lunch in one of the many excellent restaurants found in town. Enjoy a free afternoon to further explore Verona: Juliet's balcony, Castelvecchio castle and bridge, the ancient Roman bridge and 1st century BC Roman theater cunningly built into a hillside, the Giusti gardens, a masterpiece of Renaissance landscaping with manicured boxwood hedges and soaring cypresses, or walk to the top of the belvedere to get a sweeping view of this romantic city. Dinner oyo.

Day 12 – Sept 22, Tues

After breakfast Departure from Verona-Villafranca international airport. Check-out time at hotel is by 11am. We recommend you book a flight that departs around noon (11am – 2pm). We will offer only a limited amount of transfers to airport, therefore if you remain within our suggested time slot you can avoid having to wait at the airport for a long time if your flight departs very late, or having to reach airport by your own means, if your flight departs very early.
