Cooking by the sea in Tuscany 2027
MAY 10 - 20, 2027
Program
May 10, Mon - Day 1
Arrival at Pisa Airport Galileo Galilei or Viareggio train station and transfer to Casa Piero. The venue in Viareggio is a newly renovated, early twentieth-century town house with five en suites that's just a five-minute walk from the beach and right around the corner from the market and the city's best cafés and restaurants. Viareggio is a seaside resort in northern Tuscany boasting a two-mile-long esplanade lined with decorative Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings, historic cafés and fancy boutiques. Welcome aperitifs and dinner at Casa Piero.
May 11, Tues - Day 2
After breakfast free time in the afternoon to explore Viareggio, walk the esplanade to admire the architecture, people watch at one of the outdoor cafés, and/or go window shopping. If it's a warm, sunny day, as is often the case in May, you could go for a swim in the sea and sunbathe. Walk down the pier for a great view of the sea and majestic mountain stretch rising in the background. Rent bikes and ride through Viareggio's shady parks or on one of the town's many bike trails. These are just some of the many activities you can enjoy in this seaside resort. Lunch oyo. In the afternoon take part in a fun, hands-on cooking class preparing dinner.
May 12, Wed - Day 3
After breakfast, drive through the idillic Tuscan countryside to San Gimignano, the 14 towers of the walled town rise up like a medieval Manhattan. Here there is a palpable sense of history with its intact medieval streetscapes and enchanting rural setting. Have lunch oyo. Return to Viareggio in the afternoon for dinner in Casa Piero.
extra wine tasting?????
May 13, Thurs - Day 4
It's market day in Viareggio so spend the morning browsing through the countless stalls that sell everything from fine linen clothes, leather goods, food products, to kitchenware and bed linens. If shopping is not your thing you could visit the modern art museum that’s right around the corner from Casa Piero. In the late afternoon visit Pietrasanta, a charming little town that attracts artists from around the world. Beautiful palazzi, churches and lively cafés overlook the vast, open central square that is frequently the site of whimsical sculpture exhibits. Dinner in Pietrasanta at local restaurant.
May 14, Fri - Day 5
After breakfast visit the amazing, late baroque gardens of Villa Reale in Marlia with a stately, French-inspired rectangular pool, a Pan grotto, a nymphaeum, an English-style park and a most original, trimmed boxwood theater with terracotta statues depicting performers. Lunch oyo. In the afternoon the second formal cooking class will take place preparing dinner.
May 15, Sat - Day 6
After breakfast head to the northernmost part of Tuscany, a lush and mountainous area known as Lunigiana. Visit the picturesque and ancient town of Pontremoli wedged between two streams. Atop the town lies a fortress where mysterious, prehistoric statues known as 'Stele' are housed. Lunch oyo. Return to Viareggio for dinner, if time permits we can stop briefly at the very pretty dot of a town Bagnone. Dinner in Casa Piero.
May 16, Sun - Day 7
After breakfast visit the endearing city of Lucca on the day the antique/vintage market is being held. The old city center is hidden behind imposing Renaissance walls. Its cobbled streets, handsome piazzas and shady promenades make it a perfect destination to spend the day and with a ratio of 1 shop per every 3 inhabitants it's a great place for shopping. In the morning go for a walk to see the town's main sites (approximately a two-mile walk). After lunch oyo you can decide to go on an additional walk to explore the town further, ride bikes around the tree-lined city walls, or catch a museum. Return to Viareggio. Free time to go for a stroll, shop, ride a bike or go for a dip in the sea before dinner at Casa Piero.
May 17, Mon - Day 8
After breakfast drive to La Spezia to catch a ferry to visit what is arguably the prettiest of all the coastal towns in Liguria. A colorful huddle of old fishermen's homes greet those who visit the picturesque seaside town of Portovenere. Leisurely strolls through winding, narrow streets will disclose spectacular seascapes of emerald waters lapping along the town's rocky shoreline (approximately a one-mile, partly uphill walk). Lunch oyo. Enjoy a wine tasting en route back to Viareggio. Dinner in Casa Piero.
May 18, Tues - Day 9
After breakfast spend a lazy day at the beach, sunbathing and enjoying a swim in the sea. Lunch oyo. In the afternoon we’re off to Pisa to see what is perhaps one of Italy’s most famous symbols: The Leaning Tower! Admire the other stunning buildings that make up this majestic piazza. Be surprised to discover how many other noteworthy sights there are to see in this charming and lively university town. Dinner in Pisa at a local restaurant.
May 19, Wed - Day 10
After breakfast visit Forte dei Marmi, a town that could be considered Tuscany's Bel Air. For those who like shopping, you're in luck, as Wednesday is also market day in this chi-chi resort town. Have lunch oyo, return to Viareggio. The third formal cooking class will take place after lunch preparing farewell dinner.
