End of summer in Tuscany and Italian Riviera

Program

 

Day 1 – Sat, Oct 19

Arrival at Pisa Airport Galileo Galilei and transfer to Casa Piero in Viareggio, a seaside resort in Northern Tuscany. There will be a limited amount of transfers offered which will be established once everyone’s flight schedules are in. It is recommended you book a flight that lands after 11am and before 4pm. If you remain within our suggested time slot you can avoid having to wait at the airport for a long time if you should arrive too early or having to reach venue by your own means if you arrive too late. Casa Piero in Viareggio is a newly renovated, early twentieth-century town house with five en suites that's just a five-minute walk from the beach and right around the corner from the market and the city's best cafés and restaurants. When all the guests have arrived, go on an orientation walk and enjoy a gelato at one of the many excellent gelaterie in town. Welcome aperitifs and dinner at Casa Piero.

Day 2 – Fri, Aug 30

After breakfast visit Pisa to see what is perhaps one of Italy's most famous symbols, the Leaning Tower. Explore the majestic piazza made up of equally stunning white marble buildings that stand out against the square's green lawns. Be surprised to discover how many other noteworthy sights there are to see in this charming and lively university town. Lunch oyo. In the afternoon take part in a fun, hands-on cooking class preparing a full-course, traditional Viareggio meal to have for dinner.

Day 3 – Sat, Aug 31

After breakfast visit the endearing city of Lucca, hidden behind imposing Renaissance walls. Its cobbled streets, handsome piazzas and shady promenades make it a perfect destination to spend the day and with a ratio of 1 shop per every 3 inhabitants it's a great place for shopping. In the morning go for a walk to see the town's main sites (approximately a two-mile walk). After lunch you can decide to go on an additional walk to explore the town further, or enjoy free time to either go shopping, ride bikes around the tree-lined city walls, or catch a museum. Return to Viareggio. Free time in Viareggio before dinner.

Day 4 – Sun, Sept 1

After breakfast explore the Montecarlo wine region, one of the country's earliest DOCs, where wine making dates back to Roman Times. While most of Italy generally focuses on local varieties, Montecarlo has become famous for combining a unique range of grapes and is renowned for its unique blends. Visit the tiny hilltop town that gives the name to the DOC, followed by a wine tasting at one of the best wineries in the area. Lunch in a local country tavern. Return to Viareggio for an afternoon cooking class and dinner.

Day 5 - Mon, Sept 2

After breakfast experience a characteristic day at the beach in Viareggio with your own gazebo and deck chairs at one of the fancier bathing establishments found along the coast. Lunch oyo. In the afternoon drive through the lovely Lucca countryside to visit the stunning Villa Torrigiani and its ancient gardens. Return to Viareggio in the evening. Dinner in Casa Piero.

Day 6 – Tues, Sept 3

After breakfast head for the Chianti, a landscape made up of historic olive groves, honey-colored stone farmhouses, dense forests, Romanesque churches, Renaissance villas and Medieval stone castles. The vineyards in this picturesque part of Tuscany produce the world-famous reds under the Black Rooster trademark. Enjoy a wine tasting at a prize-winning winery. Return to Viareggio for dinner at Casa Piero.

Day 7 – Wed, Sept 4

After breakfast visit Forte dei Marmi, a town that could be considered Tuscany's Bel Air. For those who like shopping, you're in luck, as Wednesday is also market day in this chi-chi resort town. Head for the Apuan Alps Regional Park where spectacular mountain ranges and scenic views await. Have lunch in a local trattoria. See the charming mountain village of Seravezza. wedged between two streams and tiny Isola Santa set in fairy-tale surroundings, the grey-stone homes standing out against the emerald green lake. Return to Viareggio. Dinner at Casa Piero.

Day 8 – Thurs, Sept 5

After breakfast visit Pietrasanta, a charming little town that has attracted celebrated artists from around the world to come work and sometimes live here. Artists like Henry Moore, Joan Mirò and Niki de Saint Phalle have at some point been drawn to this tiny artists' mecca. Beautiful palazzi, churches and lively cafés overlook the vast, open central square that is frequently the site of whimsical sculpture exhibits. Lunch oyo. In the afternoon visit some of the over 50 bronze foundries, marble sculpting studios and mosaic workshops found in Pietrasanta. Dinner in Casa Piero.

Day 9 – Fri, Sept 6

After breakfast visit Livorno's indoor market, the largest covered market in Italy and the only one left in Tuscany that's truly authentic. Lunch oyo. See the tangle of small canals that make up the city's historic quarter and stroll on the black and white checkered seafront terrace. Before returning to Viareggio drive down the coast to see the unique rock formation of the cliffs and the elegant belle-époque villas. Enjoy cooking class in the afternoon with ingredients bought at the Livorno market . Dinner in Casa Piero.

Day 10 – Sat, Sept 7

After breakfast visit exclusive Portofino, the tiny but perfectly cared for coastal village that sits on its own peninsula. Walk up the 'Salita San Giorgio' that leads from the harbour and past the pretty San Giorgio church to Portofino's Castello Brown, transformed into a private mansion in the 19thcentury. The fabulous tiled staircase is one of the showpieces of the neo-Gothic interior. For even better views than those of the castle's gardens continue the climb up to reach the lighthouse. On returning to Viareggio have dinner in Casa Piero.

Day 11 – Sun, Sept 8

After breakfast drive down winding roads, through rolling hills and rows of cypress trees to reach Volterra, one of the best-preserved Medieval towns in Tuscany that boasts an Ancient Roman theater and a museum that houses one of Italy's most impressive Etruscan collections. Volterra is also renowned for its great tradition of alabaster carving. Lunch oyo. Return to Casa Piero for dinner.

Day 12 – Mon, Sept 9

After breakfast, visit the Cinqueterre, a Unesco World Heritage site, five ingenuously constructed fishing villages set amid a dramatic coastal scenery. Take a fast train to the town furthest from us, Monterosso, the biggest of all the Cinqueterre. After visiting this delightful village and having lunch oyo we'll catch a boat to admire the coastline. Hike the beautiful Via dell'Amore a footpath chiseled into the cliffside which is scheduled to fully reopen by the summer of 2024 after years of restoration. Dinner at Casa Piero.

Day 13 – Tues, Sept 10

After breakfast free time in the morning to pack, do some last minute shopping or have one final dip in the sea. Lunch oyo. to either spend a lazy day at the beach or do some last-minute shopping. In the afternoon go for a joy ride right above Viareggio for a sweeping, birdseye view of the coast and surrounding mountains. In the evening, have a fish and seafood farewell dinner in a restaurant right on the beach.

Day 14 - Wed, Sept 11

After breakfast Departure from Pisa Airport Galileo Galilei. We recommend you book a flight that departs in the late morning before noon. We will offer only a limited amount of transfers to airport, therefore if you remain within our suggested time slot you can avoid having to wait at the airport for a long time if your flight departs very late, or having to reach airport by your own means, if your flight departs very early.
