Autumn in Tuscany - food and wine

Program

Day 1 – Sat, Oct 19

Arrival at Pisa Airport Galileo Galilei and transfer to Casa Piero in Viareggio, a seaside resort in Northern Tuscany. There will be a limited amount of transfers offered which will be established once everyone’s flight schedules are in. It is recommended you book a flight that lands after 11am and before 4pm. If you remain within our suggested time slot you can avoid having to wait at the airport for a long time if you should arrive too early or having to reach venue by your own means if you arrive too late. Casa Piero in Viareggio is a newly renovated, early twentieth-century town house with five en suites that's just a five-minute walk from the beach and right around the corner from the market and the city's best cafés and restaurants. When all the guests have arrived, go on an orientation walk and enjoy a gelato at one of the many excellent gelaterie in town. Welcome aperitifs and dinner at Casa Piero.

Day 2 – Sun, Oct 20

After breakfast tour Viareggio. The pier, where in the early morning fishing boats display the day's catch and from where you can get a sweeping view of the coast and the majestic mountain range rising in the background; the shipyard, where luxury yachts get built; the two-mile long esplanade lined with decorative Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings, grand hotels, historic cafés and fancy boutiques; and Viareggio's 'central park', a huge wooded park where you can rent bikes. Have lunch oyo. In the afternoon take part in a fun, hands-on cooking class preparing a full-course, traditional Viareggio meal to have for dinner.

Day 3 – Mon, Oct 21

After breakfast head for the Chianti, a landscape made up of historic olive groves, honey-coloured stone farmhouses, dense forests, Romanesque churches, Renaissance villas and Medieval stone castles. The vineyards in this picturesque part of Tuscany produce the world-famous reds under the Black Rooster trademark. Enjoy a wine tasting at a prize-winning winery. Return to Viareggio for dinner at Casa Piero.

Day 4 – Tues, Oct 22

After breakfast visit the endearing city of Lucca, hidden behind imposing Renaissance walls. Its cobbled streets, handsome piazzas and shady promenades make it a perfect destination to spend the day and with a ratio of 1 shop per every 3 inhabitants it's a great place for shopping. In the morning go for a walk to see the town's main sites (approximately a two-mile walk). After lunch you can decide to go on an additional walk to explore the town further, or enjoy free time to either go shopping, ride bikes around the tree-lined city walls, or catch a museum. Return to Viareggio. Free time to go for a stroll, shop, ride a bike or, if it's warm enough, go for a dip in the sea before dinner.

Day 5 – Wed, Oct 23

After breakfast, visit the Cinqueterre, a Unesco World Heritage site, five ingenuously constructed fishing villages set amid a dramatic coastal scenery. Take a fast train to the town furthest from us, Monterosso, the biggest of all the Cinqueterre. After visiting this delightful village and having lunch oyo we'll catch a boat to admire the coastline. Hike the beautiful Via dell'Amore a footpath chiseled into the cliffside which is scheduled to fully reopen by the summer of 2024 after years of restoration. Dinner at Casa Piero.

Day 6 – Thurs, Oct 24

After breakfast drive down winding roads, through rolling hills and rows of cypress trees to reach Volterra, one of the best-preserved Medieval towns in Tuscany that boasts an Ancient Roman theater and a museum that houses one of Italy's most impressive Etruscan collections. Volterra is also renowned for its great tradition of alabaster carving. Lunch oyo. Return to Casa Piero for dinner.

Day 7 – Fri, Oct 25

After breakfast visit Livorno's indoor market, the largest covered market in Italy and the only one left in Tuscany that's truly authentic. If the truffle season has already started, purchase a white truffle from San Miniato to have for dinner. After lunch oyo, visit Pisa to see what is perhaps one of Italy's most famous symbols, the Leaning Tower. Explore the majestic piazza made up of equally stunning white marble buildings that stand out against the square's green lawns. Be surprised to discover how many other noteworthy sights there are to see in this charming and lively university town. Return to Viareggio. Free time to go for a stroll, shop, ride a bike or, if it's still warm enough, go for a dip in the sea before dinner in Casa Piero.

Day 8 – Sat, Oct 26

After breakfast visit Florence, cradle of the Renaissance and a city that needs no introductions. Go on a walk to see some of the extraordinary art and architecture the city is packed with. Lunch oyo, (approximately a three-mile walk). On returning to Viareggio have farewell dinner in Casa Piero.

Day 9 – Sun, Oct 27

After breakfast head for the Apuan Alps Regional Park where spectacular mountain ranges and scenic views await. See the charming mountain village of Seravezza wedged between two streams and tiny Isola Santa set in fairy-tale surroundings, the grey stone homes standing out against the emerald green lake. Have lunch in a local trattoria. Return to Viareggio. Dinner at Casa Piero.

Day 10 – Mon, Oct 28

After breakfast explore the Montecarlo wine region, one of the country's earliest DOCs, where wine making dates back to Roman Times. While most of Italy generally focuses on local varieties, Montecarlo has become famous for combining a unique range of grapes and is renowned for its unique blends. Visit the tiny hilltop town that gives the name to the DOC, followed by a wine tasting at one of the best wineries in the area. Lunch in a local country tavern. Return to Viareggio. Dinner in Casa Piero.

Day 11 – Tues, Oct 29

After breakfast visit Pietrasanta, a charming little town that has attracted celebrated artists from around the world to come work and sometimes live here. Artists like Henry Moore, Joan Mirò and Niki de Saint Phalle have at some point been drawn to this tiny artists' mecca. Beautiful palazzi, churches and lively cafés overlook the vast, open central square that is frequently the site of whimsical sculpture exhibits. Lunch oyo. In the afternoon visit some of the over 50 bronze foundries, marble sculpting studios and mosaic workshops found in Pietrasanta. Farewell dinner in Casa Piero.

Day 11 – Wed, Oct 30

After breakfast Departure from Pisa Airport Galileo Galilei. We recommend you book a flight that departs around noon (11am – 2pm). We will offer only a limited amount of transfers to airport, therefore if you remain within our suggested time slot you can avoid having to wait at the airport for a long time if your flight departs very late, or having to reach airport by your own means, if your flight departs very early.
